Sawan Vrat Pulao Recipe: Satisfy Your Cravings with Delicious Fasting Pulao

Sawan, the holy month dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a time of devotion and fasting for many. During this period, people observe dietary restrictions and often avoid grains, regular spices, and certain vegetables. If you’re fasting but craving rice, Vrat Pulao (fasting pulao) is a perfect option. Made with ingredients allowed during fasts, this dish is light, flavorful, and satisfying. Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for Sawan Vrat Pulao to keep you energized and content.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Samak ke Chawal (barnyard millet)
  • 2 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup peanuts, roasted
  • 2 green chilies, slit (optional for spice)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)

Seasoning & Garnish:

  • Rock salt (sendha namak) as per taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional, for a tangy touch)

Optional Vegetables:

  • Diced carrots
  • Small cubes of sweet potatoes

Preparation Steps

Step 1: Wash the Millet

  1. Rinse the Samak ke Chawal thoroughly in water 2-3 times to remove excess starch.
  2. Soak the millet in water for about 15 minutes and drain it before cooking.

Step 2: Prepare the Ingredients

  1. Heat ghee in a pan on medium heat.
  2. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add the cubed potatoes and sauté until they turn golden and slightly crispy.

Step 3: Cook the Millet

  1. Mix in the soaked millet and stir well with the potatoes.
  2. Add peanuts, green chilies, rock salt, and black pepper powder.
  3. Pour in 2 cups of water. Cover the pan and let it cook on low heat for 8-10 minutes or until the millet is soft and the water is absorbed.

Step 4: Garnish and Serve

  1. Once cooked, fluff the pulao with a fork.
  2. Add a dash of lemon juice and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
  3. Serve hot with a side of curd or vrat-special chutney.

Tips for Perfect Vrat Pulao

  • Adjust water quantity as per the type of Samak ke Chawal. Some may require slightly more water.
  • To make the pulao more nutritious, add vrat-friendly veggies like pumpkin or water chestnuts.
  • Use homemade ghee for enhanced flavor and authenticity.
