Two cases of HMPV in Nagpur, seven and 13 year old children tested positive

Two children in Nagpur, aged 7 and 13, have tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). Both were initially treated for suspected H1N1 (swine flu) with Tamiflu, but subsequent PCR tests confirmed HMPV on January 3. The children received outpatient treatment and have since recovered.

These cases are part of a total of seven HMPV infections recently reported in India, including two each in Bengaluru and Tamil Nadu, and one in Ahmedabad. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda has stated that HMPV is not a new virus and was first identified in 2001. He emphasized that the health ministry, along with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), is actively monitoring the situation. Nadda reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm, as HMPV infections are often self-limiting and rarely require hospitalization.

HMPV is known to cause respiratory illnesses ranging from mild infections to severe conditions like bronchiolitis and pneumonia. It spreads through respiratory droplets and can affect individuals of all age groups, with increased transmission during winter and early spring months. Health experts advise that timely intervention can prevent complications, and symptomatic care, including adequate hydration and rest, is usually sufficient for recovery.

In Nagpur, the local health authorities have sent the test samples to AIIMS Nagpur for further examination to confirm the initial findings. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation is also involved in re-testing the samples to ensure accuracy.

The health ministry continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that surveillance networks remain vigilant to respond promptly to any emerging health challenges. The public is advised to maintain good respiratory hygiene and consult healthcare providers if they experience symptoms of respiratory illness.
