Lahsuni Methi Roti Recipe: A Flavorful Twist on the Classic Indian Roti

If you’re craving something unique for breakfast or dinner, Lahsuni Methi Roti is the perfect choice! A healthy and delicious variation of the traditional Indian roti, this recipe combines the bold flavors of garlic (lahsuni) and fenugreek leaves (methi) to create a flavorful, nutritious flatbread. Methi roti is already packed with nutrients, and adding garlic enhances its taste while giving it a wonderful aroma. Here’s a simple recipe to make this flavorful roti at home.

Ingredients:

  • Whole wheat flour – 2 cups
  • Fresh fenugreek leaves (methi) – 1 cup, finely chopped
  • Garlic (lahsun) – 5-6 cloves, finely chopped or grated
  • Green chili – 1, finely chopped (optional, adjust to taste)
  • Cumin seeds (jeera) – 1 tsp
  • Ajwain (carom seeds) – 1 tsp (optional)
  • Salt – to taste
  • Red chili powder – 1/2 tsp (optional)
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tsp
  • Oil – 1-2 tbsp (for kneading and cooking)
  • Water – as needed for kneading the dough

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Methi (Fenugreek Leaves):

  • Wash the fresh methi leaves thoroughly to remove any dirt. You can also soak them for a few minutes and then drain.
  • Finely chop the methi leaves and set them aside.

2. Prepare the Garlic and Spice Mixture:

  • In a small pan, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat.
  • Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then, add the finely chopped garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until it turns golden brown.
  • Add the green chili (if using) and sauté for another minute. Turn off the heat and let the garlic mixture cool down slightly.

3. Make the Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, add whole wheat flour, salt, red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and ajwain.
  • Add the finely chopped methi leaves to the flour and mix them in.
  • Pour in the garlic and spice mixture (along with the oil from the pan) and mix well.
  • Gradually add water to the flour mixture and knead into a soft dough. The dough should be pliable, but not sticky. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15-20 minutes.

4. Roll the Rotis:

  • After the dough has rested, divide it into small balls (about the size of a golf ball).
  • Roll each ball into a smooth ball, then flatten it slightly.
  • Dust the dough ball with a little dry flour and roll it out into a round roti. Be gentle while rolling to maintain the shape and thickness.

5. Cook the Lahsuni Methi Roti:

  • Heat a tawa or griddle on medium-high heat.
  • Place the rolled-out roti onto the hot tawa. Cook for about 1-2 minutes, or until bubbles begin to form on the surface.
  • Flip the roti and cook the other side. Press gently with a cloth or spatula to ensure it cooks evenly.
  • Optionally, you can drizzle a little oil or ghee on top for extra flavor and crispiness. Flip and cook the roti on both sides until golden brown.

6. Serve:

  • Serve the Lahsuni Methi Roti hot with yogurt, pickle, or your favorite curry. It can be enjoyed as a stand-alone dish as well!

Tips for Perfect Lahsuni Methi Roti:

  • You can adjust the quantity of garlic and green chili based on your preference for heat.
  • If fresh methi leaves are not available, you can use dried methi leaves (kasuri methi), but fresh leaves give a much better flavor.
  • For a richer taste, you can brush the cooked roti with ghee.

Health Benefits:

  • Methi (fenugreek) is rich in iron, calcium, and fiber, making it a great addition to your diet for promoting healthy digestion and balancing blood sugar levels.
  • Garlic adds not only a strong flavor but also provides numerous health benefits, including improving heart health and boosting immunity.

Enjoy this delicious and nutritious twist on the classic roti with a burst of garlicky goodness!
