An 80-year-old man in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), marking the first reported case of the virus in an elderly individual in India. The patient, who has a history of asthma, was hospitalized on January 8, 2025, and his condition is currently stable. Notably, he has no recent travel history abroad.
HMPV is a respiratory virus that typically causes symptoms similar to the common cold, including cough, runny nose, and sore throat. While it can affect individuals of all ages, it is particularly concerning for the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, as they may experience more severe respiratory issues.
This case follows earlier reports of HMPV infections in infants in Bengaluru, Karnataka, highlighting the virus’s potential to impact both the very young and the elderly.
Health officials emphasize the importance of preventive measures to curb the spread of HMPV. Recommendations include frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and maintaining good respiratory hygiene, such as covering coughs and sneezes. Additionally, individuals are advised to stay home when unwell to prevent transmission.
