UTI Prevention Tips: Do These 3 Things Daily and Protect Yourself from UTIs

1. Stay Hydrated: Drink Plenty of Water

One of the easiest and most important things you can do to prevent UTIs is to drink enough water throughout the day. Staying well-hydrated ensures that you urinate frequently, which helps flush bacteria out of your urinary system. When you don’t drink enough water, urine becomes more concentrated, which can increase the risk of bacteria growth.

Tip: Aim for at least 8 glasses (about 2 liters) of water per day, or more if you’re active or in a hot climate. If you have trouble remembering to drink, try carrying a water bottle with you or setting reminders on your phone.

2. Practice Good Hygiene: Wipe from Front to Back

Proper hygiene plays a key role in preventing UTIs, especially for women. The urethra, where urine exits the body, is close to the anus. If bacteria from the stool are introduced into the urinary tract, it can lead to an infection. To reduce this risk, always wipe from front to back after using the bathroom. This prevents harmful bacteria from entering the urethra.

Tip: Use unscented, gentle wipes if necessary, and avoid harsh soaps or douches that can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria around the genital area.

3. Urinate When You Feel the Urge: Don’t Hold It In

Holding in urine for extended periods can allow bacteria to grow in your urinary system, increasing your chances of developing a UTI. When you feel the urge to urinate, don’t wait too long to go to the bathroom. Regularly emptying your bladder helps eliminate any bacteria that may have made their way into your urinary tract.

Tip: If you’re at work or on the go, try to make time for regular bathroom breaks. Don’t wait for your bladder to feel overfull or uncomfortable.

While staying hydrated, maintaining good hygiene, and urinating when necessary are key practices, here are a few more things you can do to further reduce your risk:

  • Wear breathable underwear: Cotton underwear allows your genital area to stay dry and cool, making it harder for bacteria to thrive. Avoid tight-fitting clothing that can trap moisture.
  • Use cranberry products: Some studies suggest that cranberry juice or supplements may help prevent UTIs by making it harder for bacteria to stick to the walls of the urinary tract. However, consult with your healthcare provider before relying on cranberry products.
  • Avoid irritants: Stay away from potentially irritating products like bubble baths, feminine sprays, or scented toilet paper that can disrupt your genital area’s natural balance.

By incorporating these simple habits into your daily routine, you can significantly reduce your risk of UTIs and protect your urinary health. Remember, while these prevention tips can help, it’s important to see a doctor if you experience symptoms of a UTI, such as pain during urination, frequent urges to urinate, or cloudy or strong-smelling urine.
